All,

The streamers are still up at Oregon Ridge from the Wednesday training session for Eddie.  (I’ll leave them there at least for the month of June – somewhat longer if someone is interested.)  We’ll treat it like the traditional QOC 10k offerings of yore.  You are on your own, and at your own convenience.  Just contact me to arrange to get a map.

This was very nice summer orienteering.

Francis

-----------

June 6 at Glen Artney will be replaced by June 6 at Oregon Ridge.  Eddie has requested about 8k, some long legs with route choice.  I’ll set it so that a loop can be cut off for a shorter course.  The weather looks like 75 or a little less.  The woods are beautiful, and fast.

I’ll be there at 5:30.  I recognize that many of you will need to make it around the Baltimore beltway if you come; so, if you will let me know you are coming, I’ll leave a map on my windshield for you, and being there at 5:30 will not be important.  Please let me know if you expect to be late with ideal traffic conditions.

There is a good pizza shop nearby. (was!, but the Chipotle burritos were good)

Please let me know, if you will be there, and I will print a map for you.

Location is Oregon Ridge at the main (very large) parking lot (about 750m se of the lot we have normally used for QOC events and near the old ski slope).  We’ll be near the sw corner of that lot.

Thank you,

Hey Everyone,

Many of you heard me talk today at Jug Bay about the upcoming Bushwacker Adventure Race that will be held next Sunday, June 10th at 8 AM at Fountainhead, VA. It is essentially a runners vs. orienteers type of event and QOC has done VERY well at this race in the past. We hope many of you can come out and run the race and do the club proud. You can either run the 20K race solo, or in teams of two (2 x 10k each). The course starts at Fountainhead, runs to Bull Run Marina, and then returns to Fountainhead.

For more details, and to register, go to this link: http://www.ex2adventures.com/ar-runs.php

Regular registration goes until Wednesday the 6th, and its $65 for the solo category, and $50 per person for the team category (which is broken-up into male, female, coed, and masters divisions).

For those who are interested in running on a team, just respond to this email and coordiated with each other.

Thanks--Here's to more QOC victories!

QOC Jug Bay Chase & Lots More This Sunday

Greg Lennon

Time for The Chase! The regular QOC 2011-2012 season ends this Sunday at Jug Bay with our annual general meeting at 11:30am followed by the traditional Chase event at noon and
subsequent potluck picnic. Everyone's welcome, QOC member or not. Full details on the event webpage . But note:
  • This event is free to all QOC members who pre-register in time, so head to the event webpage  now! Regular entry fees apply to all non-members and to members who register at the event.
  • Courses on offer: White, Yellow, Orange, Short Chase (2 loops; 4.5k) and Long Chase (3 loops; 6.4k).
  • Silly obstacle course for the young and young at heart, taking place after The Chase.
  • Potluck Picnic: bring food(s) to share or grill. We'll have the grills along with beverages (more beer?!), desserts and paper goods.
  • Come check out the two fabric choices we have for the next supply of QOC Jerseys - quick dry or mesh. Tell us your preferences! Kathleen (Lennon) will have a sizing kit available too. If you won't be at Jug Bay, just let her know you're interested in a jersey so we get a good sense of how many to order.
  • Bring a canoe or kayak (and paddle, PFD, etc) if you wish; exploring the Patuxent River is always a fine post-race activity.
  • Sorry, but dogs are not allowed at Jug Bay.
  • Summer series events coming soon!
  • Some may be interested in running EX2's Bushwhacker Race  next Sunday (June 10) at Fountainhead Park; in some ways, it's an orienteers vs trail runners race since all runners get a map and can take any route between the checkpoints, but many folks never leave the trail. It's 20K, run either solo or split 10K/10K between two-person relay teams. Register now to guarantee a T-shirt or at least by June 6 for a discount.
Come celebrate another fine season of orienteering in the Mid-Atlantic and enjoy the fine weather at this scenic venue!

North American Championships early registration deadline

Jon

For anyone who has been meaning to register but the precise timing of the end of early registration has slipped their mind, tomorrow is the last day to register for NAOC 2012, to be hosted by our neighbours to the north, DVOA this coming October. The online registration system can be found at http://www.naoc2012.org/.

For anyone who hasn't been planning their fall orienteering already, this will be easily the biggest orienteering event in North America this year and DVOA is hard at work to make sure it's one of the best as well. And it will be held within easy driving distance of QOC turf. If you're looking for an out-of-town orienteering weekend this fall, you need look no further.

This Sunday: Patapsco/Glen Artney Event with a New Map

Greg Lennon

This Sunday, May 20, select your course from among the seven (White through Blue; 2 beginner, 1 intermediate, 4 advanced) courses designed by course designer Ted Good on his new brand new map of the Glen Artney area of Patapsco Valley State Park (near Catonsville, MD). Register at the event from 10:45am - 1:15pm, start anytime between 11am - 1:30pm, and be out of the woods by 3pm. Full event details are on the event webpage.

Event directors Kim & Anne Jepsen will have a full crew at the ready to help with event logistics, and to remind you to please be especially careful crossing South Rolling Road as you go from the parking/registration area to the start and finish area.

Come enjoy a newly mapped area in what promises to be a beautiful day weather wise as well!

2012 Summer Short Series

Peggy Dickison

It's time to start thinking about summer orienteering.

If you're interested in hosting an event, let me know what your preferred date and location are. If you don't have a date yet, you can just notify me of your interest at this point. As in most years, I'm aiming to fill every weekend :-) with orienteering opportunities. Like last year, I'm hoping we'll have some out-of-the-ordinary events. Stay tuned for announcements.

To help in your planning, here is a partial schedule of major and/or somewhat local events you may want to plan around. Most of the non-US events have at least one QOCer planning on attending.

June 3 -- QOC Beverage Chase ... the SSS season begins after this event!
June 9/10
8-14 Military World O' Champs (Denmark)
10 Yukon O' Champs (Canada)
June 16/17
16-17 Jukola Relay (Finland)
17 DVOA - Mt. Penn )PA)
June 22/23
22-24 O-Festivalen (Norway)
June 30/July 1
June 30-July 14 North Atlantic O' Champs (Greenland, Iceland, Faroe Islands!)
1-8 World Masters O' Champs (Germany)
2-7 World University O' Champs (Spain)
July 7/8
7-14 Junior World O' Champs (Slovakia)
July 14/15
14-22 World O' Champs (Switzerland)
July 21/22
21-22 CNYO Rogaine (New York)
22-27 O-Ringen (Sweden)
July 28/29
August 4/5
4-5 Race of Hope Rogaine (Ohio)
5 DVOA - French Creek East (PA)
August 11/12
11 MNOC 6-hr Rogaine (Minn)
11-19 Canadian O' Champs (Alberta, Canada)
August 18/19
18-19 Dakota Rogaine Champs (Custer, SD)
20-28 World Mountain Bike O' Champs (Hungary)
August 25/26
Aug 28-Sept 3 Laramie Daze (Wyoming)
Aug 31-Sept 1 World Rogaine Champs (Czech Republic)
September 1/2/3

There are a lot of world champs of various sorts in Europe, but there's not much going on domestically this year (unlike last year). So, let's fill the void with fun, social, local training!

Balls Bluff Event This Saturday

Greg Lennon

With forecasts calling for a completely sunny day this Saturday with a high of 77 degrees and reasonable humidity, come out this Saturday to Balls Bluff Regional Park and enjoy one of course setter Don Davis's orienteering challenges. Courses on offer: beginner (white, yellow), intermediate (orange), and advanced (green, red).  The beginner courses do require off trail travel, just so you know. Registration will be from 10:45 - 1:15, start anytime between 11:00am - 1:30pm, and make sure to be out of the woods by 3pm.  After the event, the local Panera Bread (near the Outlet Malls) is offering all orienteers a free drink (soda, coffee or tea) with any purchase; just bring your epunch results printout to the cashier.

The registration and start area is in a new location compared to previous Balls Bluff meets, so make sure to check our event webpage for full details on how to get there and where to park (and where not to).

See you there!

P.S.  SVO also has an event this Saturday, so if you might prefer to head to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, check out their King's Gap event announcement.

Re: Digest Number 1035

John,

We certainly don't have an orienteering map of any part of the battlefield or its immediate surroundings so as far as I know the best topo map that exists of the area you're interested in would be the USGS 1:24,000 series map.

Probably anyone who will get this message got the previous one but just to be as sure as I can be, the event at Balls Bluff originally scheduled for this weekend has been rescheduled for April 12th. Hopefully there aren't too many people who are severely bummed about that. If you aren't going to West Point this weekend and need an orienteering fix, your closest choices that I know of are to drive either north to the DVOA event in French Creek State Park, PA or south to CVOC's event at Iron Bridge Park, North Chesterfield, VA (http://www.centralvaorienteering.com/events/60294512/), both scheduled for this Saturday. For my part, I'll see some of you at West Point and many more of you at Balls Bluff on the 12th.
