Summer Short Series this Saturday, 30 June
Peggy Dickison
Folks,
For the Summer series on 6/30, I will be re-using the 6/20 Wed Training course and have made some shorter versions. It promises to be very hot one so bring liquids. We will go to Sorrento’s afterwards for Dinner. Starts will be between 4-4:30.
Long: 8.9K 360m, 14 controls Mid: 7.5K 210m, 10 controls Short: 5.8K 195m, 8 controls
Training: this is a WOC training for a long course event. There are several longer routes where fine route choice decisions are the key. There are two drinking fountains on/near the course but no water at controls. Directions to Catonsville Community College (This is very close to the QOC Glen Artney meet recently) Take Interstate 95 to the Interstate 195/Rt 166 exit. Take 166 west. Follow 166 until it ends at Rolling Road. Go right on Rolling road. Go about .5-1 mile and turn left onto campus drive. There are signs for Catonsville Community College there. Follow campus drive down the hill and back up the hill. Then turn left. Campus drive does a big loop around the campus. Pull into the first large parking lot on the left. We will be in the middle part of the parking lot closest to the fields.
Map: 1:10,000 5m contours. The woods are generally open. There are some stilt grass areas but it isn’t too bad in this part of the park yet. There is no water at the start/finish. There NO BATHROOMs.
Let me know if you are coming.
Ted Good
PS from Peggy – remember, cost is $5/person, with all proceeds going to the US Senior (“Foot-O”) Team. Larger donations are welcome! (Tax deductible, too.)

Orienteering this coming Saturday
Jon
All,
It's my understanding that there will likely be a summer short series event this Saturday near Baltimore. For those of you in Virginia who might not want to travel that far north or for anyone who enjoys mountain bike orienteering, it seems worth mentioning that CVOC is also planning a score-O event this Saturday with both foot-O and bike-O as options - see http://www.centralvaorienteering.com/events/66967502/. In fact, with a 90 minute score-O time limit and a two hour start window, it's presumably an option to do the score-O both by bike and on foot if you want to maximise your orienteering. One thing to note: the forecast is apparently for extreme heat that may lead CVOC to postpone the event. CVOC plans on making a decision about that on Thursday. Jon

Hi Tom,
I’d be interested in this in principle. As you know, I’m very slow and would like to improve to sort of slow. Lately I’ve been averaging 10-11 min miles on my training runs (generally 5 miles) and managed a 9:32 pace in a recent 8K. In the (fairly recent) past I’ve managed more like an 8:30 pace in races. I’d like to improve to something like a 9:00-9:30 pace for training and 8:00 pace for races, if that is feasible.
Maybe we can talk more about this tomorrow. Karla and I are both planning to come.
Best wishes, Gary

The next summer training event is this Saturday at Wheaton Regional Park. Starts are between 4 and 5 p.m. Start and finish will be at the far southeast end of the parking lot by the train station, at the end of Shorefield Road. As this is the "Summer Short(s) Series," full leg coverings will not be necessary.

Summer Short Series This Saturday
Peggy Dickison
Hi everyone,
The first Summer Short Series event will be held this Saturday, 23 June, at Wheaton Regional Park. (Never fear, we won’t be going into the jungle-woods that Wheaton is notorious for.) Tom Nolan is the host. Here’s the information he has provided for the event.
--The course will start out with a trail run on a marked route, approx. 5k. Along the route will be a number of trail-o controls. The object is to decide which of several markers best matches the mapped location and control description. You can go back and forth along the trail to look at the controls, but you can't go off the marked route. You can take as much time as you want, but you're on the clock. There will be a time penalty for each control you miss. At the end of the trail run is a sprint with normal controls, approx. 2k. As this is the "Summer Short(s) Series," full leg coverings will not be necessary. Start and finish will be at the far southeast end of the parking lot by the train station, at the end of Shorefield Road.
Starts are from 4 to about 5. The cost for the event is $5. All proceeds will go to the US Senior Team, to help them attend the World Orienteering Championships later this summer in Switzerland, as well as to help them get to the North American Championships this fall. After everyone is done, those of us who are interested will have dinner, most likely at the nearby Wheaton Mall. There is a food court and also a Panera ( J ).
The next couple upcoming SSS events: Saturday, 30 June: Catonsville Community College (a new map!), hosted by Ted Good. There will be three course lengths (Long: 8.9K 360m, 14 controls; Mid: 7.5K 210m, 10 controls; Short: 5.8K 195m, 8 controls). More information will be sent out next week. Wednesday, 4 July: A trail run on the Catoctin Trail northwest of Frederick, followed by some lounging at the lake in Cunningham Falls State Park. This is purely just a trail run, on a hilly, rocky, single-track trail. It’s quite fun. There will be a few different options – the whole trail (point to point) of about 18 miles, a shorter run of about 12 miles, and an out-and-back from the finish for those who aren’t sure how much they want/are able to do (be forewarned that this option begins with a bunch of uphill). There *may* be a shorter version that doesn’t involve out and back. Logistics will be figured out closer to the date when we have a list of people participating. Further details to follow, but we plan to run early to avoid the heat and to be able to get into the state park before it fills up.
We still have some open dates for hosting, if you’re interested. There’s a lot of fun things on the schedule coming up! Keep an eye out for announcements.

I'm leaving for training July 2nd and wanted to get some Land Nav practice before i left. Do you know of anyone who could give me some solid training on orienteering/land nav skills here on your course? I have had training but don't feel as confident in it as i want to. We have a portion of our training that focuses on Day and Night Land Nav that is graded. I want to make sure that i have it down before i leave. I've been doing some things on my own to prepare. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. Respectfully, Alyssa Pickett ------ End of Forwarded Message

I have an agreement in principle with an experienced running coach, with whom I have run, to coach a group of QOC runners. The plan would be to run through the summer and fall, doing specific workouts under his guidance, with a goal of peaking for the NAOC in mid-October. He is not an orienteer, and the workouts would not be designed for the non-running skills involved, but they would be aimed at the kind of running we do, and would accommodate our own in-terrain workouts. He would be doing this on a volunteer basis, and would expect a certain amount of diligence and professionalism in his runners in return. In order to gauge interest in this activity, please respond to me if interested (tom.nolan@...) and tell me a little about your fitness level and running goals. I can go into more detail about how this will work after I've heard from you. I'm including a brief introduction in his own words: My name is Jacob Englander, and I was until recently the head coach of the University of Illinois cross country and track clubs. At Illinois, my teams won two National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA) championships and four National Club Track and Field Association (NCTFA) championships. I have worked with many athletes in various event groups, but my specialty has been coaching the 1500 through 10000. I have coached several college athletes under 4:00 for 1500 and 15:00 for 5000, and I have had a very good success rate for keeping people healthy and improving. Tom
