Aug 25th Summer Series: This is a week away (Valerie's event is
this weekend).

RSVP: email tedgood@comcast.net if you plan to attend.
Please RSVP by 8:00 Pm Thursday Aug 23rd (sooner is better).
Entry Form:
Name:
Post race food (Y/N): Pizza Preferences:
Course (Short/Med/Long)

The Squirrel event series is in its 7th (and potentially last)
year of the summer series. Once again there is a special theme to
this event……
For years and years, the Squirrel event has been a favorite
among summer series participants for its numerous fun activities.
There has been rope courses, scavenger hunts, cannonball runs,
basketball, foose ball, disc golf, yard work, orienteering tests,
biking,…. Oh, there was also orienteering. All this followed by the
pizza party. The map which has been slowly improving, will be
rendered largely useless when they start building new office
buildings on the remaining wooded areas. So this year the theme will
be Squirrel Extinction. It will feature traditional orienteering
with the usual plethora of other training.

Once again, there will be simple prizes awarded. I will
develop a random scoring method so there is no need to worry about
this before the race.

Location: Home of Ted and Darcy Good
Map Squirrel Kill (Map has been converted to use Lidar contours.
Contours are excellent, vegetation iffy).

Map Scale: 1:10,000 2 meter contours.
Courses: Advanced difficulty, Climb is minimal. (lengths are subject
to possible shortening).

Long Course: 8.2K (with a fair amount of open field/trail
running).
Med Course: 5.4K
Short Course: 4.5

Date: Saturday, Aug 25th
Cost: Minimum $5.00 but I expect more donations as you get so much
more from this event: food,
games, orienteering, awards, preprinted maps…… All money
goes to the U.S. team
Time: See schedule below:

Ticks: Possibly
Poison Ivy: Probably (although I haven't seen much this year on the
course)
Bathrooms: Yes, in the House, no spikes in the house
Maps Pre-printed. Bring your own map cases.

This training is geared for advanced orienteers wishing to get
some real orienteering in before the main season.
There is green on the map so gaiters and long O' clothes are
highly recommended.
All events will take place at the Good residence. No remote
start this year.

The post orienteering food will again pizza. We will provide
the pizza. You don't need to bring anything unless you have special
dietary needs. We will also have other foods available (foods TBD but
probably salads of some sort). Common sodas will be provided. Bring
your own alcohol.

Those wishing to stay for post food MUST BRING a Change of
CLOTHING (and use them) in order to gain access to the house. No
icky clothes in the main part of the house. If you plan to eat you
must also let us know so we can get enough food (see line 3 of entry
form). Showers will again be available for competitors.

SCHEDULE:
1500: Registration opens. Come hang out and mingle.
1600: First Start. Staggered starts but it is more fun if everyone
if there to watch.
1800: Course closes. Everyone should be off the course.
1800-2000: Post orienteering Food
2000: Award Ceremony

DIRECTIONS:
The event is in Severn Md. About 1/2 way between DC and Baltimore.
- Take the BW Parkway to Rt 175. Go east on Rt 175 for about ~
1.3 miles.
Go pass the shopping center on the right.
- Turn left onto Disney Rd. There is a Stop light at Disney and a
CVS pharmacy on the left.
- Go 3/4 of a mile and turn right on Frontier Rd.
- Make the first right on Prairie Court.

US Champs Registration Now Open

Greg Lennon

All members of this Yahoo! group are encouraged to take advantage of the discounted registration fees in effect from now through October 13 for the 2007 US Orienteering Championship events that we (QOC) are hosting this coming Nov 2/3/4.

Events include the 2007 US Sprint Championships, the 2007 US Individual Orienteering Championships, a World Ranking Event, and a "Fab 40 Party" at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in honor of our club's founding 40 years ago. A pretty cool looking 'US Champs' gear bag is also available.

Details are on the US Champs website, www.uschamps.org, and online registration is now open. And whether or not you will be competing, if you could spare at least 2 hours to volunteer on one or more of those days we'd love to hear from you!

SSS Saturday, 4 August 2007

We will have a Summer Short Series event this coming Saturday in
Maryland at Glendening Preserve in Upper Marlboro.

The event will consist of two sprints. Host is Francis Hogle. Assume starts at 4 pm unless you hear otherwise (I haven’t heard yet). It might be earlier as the standard closing time for the area is 5 pm.

Directions: From Washington:  Take Pennsylvania Ave. east to Capital Beltway (Rt. 495). At the Beltway, Penn. Ave. becomes Rt. 4; follow Rt. 4 east/south for about 10.5 miles to the "Plummer Lane" exit. (Plummer Lane is 3 miles east of Rt. 301 and 1.5 miles east of the Patuxent River). Exit right at Plummer Lane and take the second right – almost immediate – through the gate into the Sanctuary.

From Baltimore/north: From Route 695, take I-97 south. I-97 ends at Route 50. Take Route 50 West/301 South. 301 South will split from Route 50. Continue on Rt. 301 south to Route 4 at Upper Marlboro. Go east/south on Rt. 4 for 3 miles (1.5 miles after crossing over the Patuxent River) to the "Plummer Lane" exit on right and take the second right – almost immediate – through the gate into the Sanctuary.

As always, a social dinner will follow, at a location TBD. Donations to the US Team, suggested minimum is $5. (We kick some back to the Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary for this event, so please consider increasing your donation by a couple bucks.)

SSS-like event tomorrow 7/29, 4pm

Greg Lennon

There will be an informal training session tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon suitable for a small number of advanced orienteers, hosted by individuals (rather than as an official event hosted by QOC). The will be a short loop, a long loop, and the option to do one or both. Start window is suggested to be between 4 - 4:30, with the intent being to have everyone out of the woods by 5:30/6. [ie it's not a mass start] Getting together afterwards for dinner at a local restaurant is likely given sufficient interest.

Meet at the parking lot just off MacArthur Blvd, and across from Old Angler's Inn (10801 MacArthur Blvd, Potomac, MD). We're hoping the "upper" parking lot will have enough spaces, but on a Saturday afternoon you may want to grab any space you see and come find us. A map of this area is here, from which driving directions can be generated if needed. [If the link isn't working, it's basically pointing to coordinates 38.9819, -77.2266.]

Since this is an unofficial training session for a small group, and not open nor advertised to the public per se, no permit is required or being sought. Nonetheless, it behooves us to avoid over-publicizing our presence, so actions like wearing our new colorful QOC jerseys or otherwise overtly calling attention to ourselves is discouraged. 'Nuff said?

If you're an advanced orienteer and/or interested in participating, please confirm your likely attendance and course (short, long, or both) by email or phone to Peggy, especially so we can make sure to have enough maps printed for everyone.

There will be a Summer Short Series event this *Sunday*, 8 July, in
Greenbelt Park, Maryland. We'll meet at Sweetgum parking area (the
usual meet location) and start around 4 pm. The event will be a memory
o' exercise.
There is no limit to the number of participants, but the event will be
geared to advanced orienteers. Others are welcome (with the caveat
that they should be prepared to pack it in after the time limit or if
they're having lots of difficulty).
As always, we'll adjourn post-run to a nearby eatery (to be determined -
- perhaps 3 Brothers).
Peggy (& Kris & Valerie)

ps, note it's SUNDAY, not Saturday :-)

Good news! Vic Culp has signed on as Meet Director for Hemlock and Tom Strat will be the Course Setter. Don Davis is the new course setter for Balls Bluff in April.

Now the only missing pieces are a Course Setter and Meet Director for the Feb. 24 meet at Prince William Park...on the newly mapped area that we will be using for the U.S. Champs this fall! How exciting!

In addition, I know Sid could use some assistance for the Lake Accotink meet on Sept. 15. This is the National Orienteering Day event, so we are bound to have many beginners.

Thanks,

consider doing Hemlock. If you have never been a meet director or

If there is enough interest in an event that’s being announced this late in the week, I would like to offer a Line-O training exercise at 4:00pm at Blockhouse Park in Montgomery County, MD.   This event will be limited to 20 people.  If you want to come, please RSVP before Saturday if possible.  I’ll confirm whether this is on or not by sending an e-mail out on Friday evening.  You may also call 301 657-1024 to confirm.

Line-O is an advanced training technique that’s sometime used for competitions.  Advanced navigation skill is required.  You will attempt to follow a navigation line that is drawn onto the map.  If successful, you’ll go to various features which you should be able to anticipate and recognize.  This exercise builds the skill to read the map while on the run.  People will generally go at a slower pace than when racing but since the course distance is measured along the curve, times may be comparable.  Two courses will be offered.  One will be about 4K and the other about 7.5K; as measured along the curved line.  You will probably get your feet wet on the longer loop.  I may or may not have controls put out depending upon available setup time—in this exercise controls are optional since the features you see should be self evident.  A control would only help confirm your position.  Please bring your own map cases (8.5” x 11”) if you have them.  Blockhouse is a bit hilly but has several areas with nice open woods.  Restrooms and water are not available.

Directions:  From the Capital Beltway (I-495), the park is about 10 miles straight down River Rd..   After passing the Falls Rd. traffic light at the town of Potomac you still have 6 miles.  You’ll pass Esworthy Rd. on your right and Pennyfield Lock Rd. on your left (before a big downhill) about half a mile before getting to the main parking area.  The main parking area is a gravel lot on the left, near the top of the hill and is within a gas line cut.  There is a good sign for it.

As usual for SSS events, those who are hungry will probably eat together after the training.  Pizza in Potomac is likely.

Nadim,

I'm very interested in improving my navigation skills. I would consider myself an intermediate navigator and had not been able to get to any of the spring O-meets because of my work schedule at REI. If you don't get 20 people, do you think I could come out and try the course. I'd work slowly and probably not do the entire course.

If there is enough interest in an event thats being announced this late in the week, I would like to offer a Line-O training exercise at 4:00pm at Blockhouse Park in Montgomery County, MD.   This event will be limited to 20 people.  If you want to come, please RSVP before Saturday if possible.  Ill confirm whether this is on or not by sending an e-mail out on Friday evening.  You may also call 301 657-1024 to confirm.

Line-O is an advanced training technique thats sometime used for competitions.  Advanced navigation skill is required.  You will attempt to follow a navigation line that is drawn onto the map.  If successful, youll go to various features which you should be able to anticipate and recognize. I may or may not have controls put out depending upon available setup timein this exercise controls are optional since the features you see should be self evident.  A control would only help confirm your position.  Please bring your own map cases (8.5 x 11) if you have them.

Youll pass Esworthy Rd. on your right and Pennyfield Lock Rd. on your left (before a big downhill) about half a mile before getting to the main parking area.  The main parking area is a gravel lot on the left, near the top of the hill and is within a gas line cut.  There is a good sign for it.

As usual for SSS events, those who are hungry will probably eat together after the training.  Pizza in Potomac is likely.
