Description: QOC event announcements - like many things this year! - are changing, and will now focus on upcoming pre-registration announcements since all events require pre-registration and payment. We will not be able to offer day-of registration (at the event). We will be aiming to open registration at noon on the Monday before each event and close it at 6pm the night before the event, but check these announcements since circumstances may compel us to time things differently for certain events. And now for the main announcement of this message ...

Registration for our Sunday Oct. 4 Cunningham Falls (MD) orienteering event will open this Monday Sept. 28 at noon, and close 6pm Saturday Oct. 3. Since we will have a limited capacity for each of the four check-in time windows, the longer you wait to register the greater the odds some or all of the check-in time windows will have sold out.
The registration link and full event details including course stats for this classic event (white through blue courses) are on the Cunningham Falls event webpage.

P.S. If you haven't already registered for this Sunday's (Sept. 27) Gunston Hall event, there may be some check-in times still available if you act quickly; see that event webpage for details.

All QOC members are encouraged to vote online for this year's Board candidates and on a proposal to modify member dues, and should have received an email today (Aug. 22) with the voting link/URL.

Season Cancellation: Update for QOC Members

Greg Lennon

Edited

We hope all QOC members and their families are staying healthy and managing to navigate the constantly changing restrictions and challenges caused by the COVID 19 pandemic.  Unfortunately, in light of the increasing number of COVID-19-related restrictions affecting the parks we enjoy orienteering in, as well as in recognition of the severity of this pandemic, the QOC Board of Directors has decided to cancel all remaining scheduled QOC events through May. This was a very difficult decision, but the Board felt that it was in the best interest of all of our members and the many volunteers who make our events possible.  We anticipate that our 2020-2021 season will begin in the Fall as it normally does.

We encourage any QOC member needing assistance of any type to contact us, and we'll do our best to be of help. We will also be extending the term of all active QOC memberships by three months as a small gesture of thanks to all of you. We value you as a member and we look forward to seeing you at an orienteering event later this year.

Sincerely,

Your QOC Board of Directors

Day Out in Nature

Hi everyone,
The Skyline Drive in Shenandoah NP is open, and it doesn't cost anything (the only officials I met today, were mobile Rangers keeping an eye out for stranded or speeding drivers).
There are dozens of hikes available. Just pick the trailhead with the least cars (social distancing) and you are in business.
Since there are no leaves out yet up there, you can enjoy also great views.

Sorry folks, but circumstances have led to the cancellation of this Sunday's orienteering event at Patapsco/McKeldin. We hope to reschedule it in the near future.

Description: Head to the McKeldin area of Patapsco Valley State Park (near Marriottsville, MD) this Sunday, March 15, to enjoy one of the seven (white through blue) orienteering courses designed by Kim Jepsen. This is a reasonably steep terrain, and we recommend reading the course setter comments as well as the event details before choosing your course. One other recommendation: carry your own water if you feel you'd like it while out on your course. We will provide it at this event, but water controls may be discontinued in the near future.

The event webpage is here, and event timing is standard: register any time between 10:45 - 1:15, start between 11 - 1:30, and finish before 3pm. Weather forecasts are predicting a partly sunny day with high temps around the mid-50's, so it should be a fine day to be out orienteering if you're dressed appropriately!

Description:

Welcome to the Leap Year Bumble, taking place this Saturday, Feb. 29! The Bumble is a fun orienteering event with courses for all skill levels (yes, beginners are welcome!), and this year it will be held at Smokey Glen Farm, with courses going into Seneca Creek State Park. The Bumble is perfect for orienteers who usually run beige through blue level courses, and it has a mass start at Noon. We will also offer White, Yellow, and Orange courses, and those participants can start anytime between 11:00am – 1:30pm. Registration, downloading, and the post-race party will be in the lower pavilion of Smokey Glen Farm, a warm, indoor building with restrooms and plenty of parking. Because of the mass-start we will open registration at 10:30 am. Please note that spikes are not allowed in the Pavilion, and, dogs are not allowed anywhere on this property.

After the race, we will enjoy a pizza party and get-together; due to licensing issues, please do not bring any home-made or prepared food into the pavilion (but brand-name, packaged snacks are OK). Instead, join us for lunch for just an extra $5 per adult, teen, and tween; no charge for kids 8 and under. We will be sure to have vegetarian, vegan & gluten-free options.

For a ton of event details, including details about the Bumble courses and the course maps, head to our event webpage and make sure to check out the David Onkst's course setter notes.

See you Saturday!

Big Woods event - camping in French Creek

Is anyone who is going to DVOA's Big Woods National Event planning on staying in the French Creek campground?  It is much closer than Exton to the events both days.  Of course, it is also cheaper although breakfast is not included.

Description: Come enjoy one of the full set of orienteering courses (white through blue) in the Glen Artney area of the Patapsco Valley State Park system this Sunday! This event also features the option to try a different navigational challenge: amateur radio direction finding (ARDF), at least if you reserve a unit in advance. Timing for the ARDF event is the same as for our regular courses (start between 11 - 1:30 and be back by 3), so keep that in mind if you want to do both.

Please note two things about this venue ... First, it has strict "ground use" policies such that too much rain in the day(s) just before the event can force us to have to reschedule, so, make sure to check the website before driving there. Second, once there, please be very careful crossing the road to get to/from the start/finish area from the parking/registration area, since traffic may be going at 40+ mph on this road.

Full event details, including how to reserve an ARDF receiver as well as driving directions and course details, can be found on our event webpage.

See you there!

FYI, course notes are now posted on the web site.  And a reminder - I'll be leading a course review of the Red course at 1:45pm.  I hope enough red runners can stick around until then to make for an interesting discussion, though all are welcome to participate - there's plenty to be learned from studying the map as a route choice exercise and then hearing how the real life route choices of others worked out for them. Until tomorrow.

Description: Welcome to QOC's first event of 2020! This year, for the first time, we will be parking right at Turkey Run Ridge in the parking lot and camping areas. Please drive directly there, following QOC signage, and to save spaces, carpool if possible.

We are required to have pre-registration for this event, so if you haven't already, please register and pay now using the online form available through our event webpage. You'll find full course details for the seven courses there as well, which have been set to take advantage of the fine woods around and especially south of Turkey Run.

Please note that although the park increased its entrance fees to $20 on January 1, they have agreed to maintain the $15 fee for our event. If the pay station at the park entrance is unmanned, pay the entry fee at the park HQ (Visitors Center) before driving out to the registration site at Turkey Run Ridge. By the way, given that an annual park pass costs $35, QOC members might consider buying an annual pass for this great park; seniors (age 62 or over) can buy an annual pass good nationwide for $20 or a lifetime pass for $80. For even more info, including driving directions, head to the event webpage.

See you Sunday!
