Reminder: Orienteer This Sunday at Patapsco/Glen Artney

When: Sunday, 23 February 2020, 11:00am to 3:00pm, (GMT-05:00) America/New York

Where:1198 S Rolling Rd, Catonsville, MD 21228

Organizer: QOC

Description: Come enjoy one of the full set of orienteering courses (white through blue) in the Glen Artney area of the Patapsco Valley State Park system this Sunday! This event also features the option to try a different navigational challenge: amateur radio direction finding (ARDF), at least if you reserve a unit in advance. Timing for the ARDF event is the same as for our regular courses (start between 11 - 1:30 and be back by 3), so keep that in mind if you want to do both.

Please note two things about this venue ... First, it has strict "ground use" policies such that too much rain in the day(s) just before the event can force us to have to reschedule, so, make sure to check the website before driving there. Second, once there, please be very careful crossing the road to get to/from the start/finish area from the parking/registration area, since traffic may be going at 40+ mph on this road.

Full event details, including how to reserve an ARDF receiver as well as driving directions and course details, can be found on our event webpage.

See you there!

Re: Upcoming Event: Orienteer in Fountainhead Regional Park This Sunday - Sun, 01/26/2020 11:00am-3:00pm #cal-reminder

FYI, course notes are now posted on the web site.  And a reminder - I'll be leading a course review of the Red course at 1:45pm.  I hope enough red runners can stick around until then to make for an interesting discussion, though all are welcome to participate - there's plenty to be learned from studying the map as a route choice exercise and then hearing how the real life route choices of others worked out for them. Until tomorrow.

Description: Welcome to QOC's first event of 2020! This year, for the first time, we will be parking right at Turkey Run Ridge in the parking lot and camping areas. Please drive directly there, following QOC signage, and to save spaces, carpool if possible.

We are required to have pre-registration for this event, so if you haven't already, please register and pay now using the online form available through our event webpage. You'll find full course details for the seven courses there as well, which have been set to take advantage of the fine woods around and especially south of Turkey Run.

Please note that although the park increased its entrance fees to $20 on January 1, they have agreed to maintain the $15 fee for our event. If the pay station at the park entrance is unmanned, pay the entry fee at the park HQ (Visitors Center) before driving out to the registration site at Turkey Run Ridge. By the way, given that an annual park pass costs $35, QOC members might consider buying an annual pass for this great park; seniors (age 62 or over) can buy an annual pass good nationwide for $20 or a lifetime pass for $80. For even more info, including driving directions, head to the event webpage.

Introductory online Karttapullautin class this Sunday and again in January

Jon

All,

I've talked in the past about someday putting together a clinic on how to make orienteering basemaps. Someday may yet come but while we await it, US Team Member Greg Ahlswede is offering an online introductory clinic covering some of the same ground I would cover, specifically how to use the software Karttapullautin to generate as close as possible to usable orienteering maps directly from LiDAR data with no or minimal human editing, this Sunday at 5pm and again on January 12.  I forget what online software he'll be using but this will be one of those deals where you share the screen of his computer and a voice connection via your computer to help you follow along.  If that's of interest, the link to signup for this Sunday's clinic is https://forms.gle/KsTwBhv9XafX4wLt6

Mason Neck Brown Course Review Discussion

Aaron Linville

Thanks to everyone who participated in Brown corse review at Mason Neck. For those who couldn’t make it, I’ve compiled some of the discussion items and put them together with some select tracks that were uploaded to Route Gadget and put them into a PDF available at the QOC website (link below). Thanks to the 41 runners who took the time to upload their routes (and you still can if you haven’t yet done so!)

QOC members,

A reminder - SVO has requested that people pre-register for Sunday's Mid-Atlantic Championships no later than today and isn't guaranteeing a map will be available for anyone who doesn't meet that deadline.  There's no need to pay until you show up on Sunday and no penalty for not showing, so if there's any chance of your making it to the event, please register today.  When I checked earlier today, DVOA was slightly ahead of us in the number of members registered, so given their smaller membership, they're definitely beating us handily in the points for participation unless that turns around.

By contrast, you can take your time to contact me about running in the relay - just based on the visible registration data, less than a quarter of the QOC members who plan on running in the relay have done so to date, either to tell me about the team they've put together or to tell me they'd like me to assign them to a team. While I'd appreciate if everyone doesn't wait until the last minute, it's okay to put that off until Saturday.  Thanks.
