Orienteer This Sunday at Mason Neck - With a Twist

Greg Lennon

Come enjoy the relatively balmy weather predicted for this Sunday, Feb. 21, orienteering at Mason Neck State Park (near Lorton, VA) - high temperatures are predicted to approach 60 degrees.

Beginner courses (white and yellow) are available and are classic point-to-point courses. Additionally, as Event Director and Course Designer, Rae Ann & Mark Hicks have designed a new way for intermediate and advanced orienteers to take advantage of the relatively flat Mason Neck terrain: Twisted-O.

What's Twisted-O? Check the event webpage for full details, but in brief, it's a 75 minute Score-O in which some controls are mandatory, most are not, and - here comes the twist - a few are worth double points, and you'll need to figure out which ones during your run. Points are subtracted for going over 75 minutes.

Event Timing is standard: register at the event any time between 10:45 - 1:15, start any time between 11 - 1:30, and be back no later than 3pm. Especially if you're doing the 75 minute Score-O, make sure to bring a watch.

And after the event, enjoy the food along with a 15% QOC discount at the Quizno's or zPizza located nearby in Lorton - they are next to one another and are looking forward to seeing you after your run. Driving directions both to the event and to these eateries are on the event webpage.

Special Reminder! Next weekend (Feb. 27-28) the Happyland Camp at Prince William Forest is ours, and we have training sessions for both juniors and adults along with a Night-O event on Saturday and a (classic) Day event on Sunday plus our Winter Meeting/Potluck. Online registration is open now for the training events and overnight cabin stays so sign up now!
